Kyoung-Jin Shin, Professor

Education:
D.D.S. Pre-dental course and Dentistry, Yonsei University, 1992
M.S. Dentistry, Yonsei University, 1999
Ph.D. Medical Science, Yonsei University, 2002
Visiting Scholar. College of Chemistry, University of California at Berkeley, 2005 - 2006

BioSketch:
Kyoung-Jin Shin studied dentistry at Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea. He earned his M.Sc. in Forensic Odontology at Yonsei University (1999), and received his Ph.D. in Forensic Genetics at Yonsei University (2002). He is a professor of the Department of Forensic Medicine, Yonsei University College of Medicine and the chairman of Korean Speaking Working Group of the ISFG.
His early work in forensic genetics was focused on DNA typing of old skeletal remains. He had carried out the national projects - Identifying casualties from Korean War. His intensive efforts in the analysis of sequence variations and phylogeny of mtDNA have led to the development of a web-based forensic resource, mtDNAmanager (http://mtmanager.yonsei.ac.kr). Other topics of interest included the population genetics of Y-chromosomal STR/SNP in Koreans and its application to forensics.
In addition, he developed capillary electrophoresis-based STR multiplex PCR systems, Kplex Kit series, which are actually being used in forensic casework in Korea. He designed also in-house next generation sequencing (NGS) panels for forensic analysis of mitochondrial DNA, autosomal and Y-chromosomal STRs, and microhaplotype markers. He has been investigating sequence variation of forensic DNA markers in several population samples using the developed NGS panels and web-based tools. He is currently performing two major projects, mixed DNA analysis using microhaplotype NGS system and low template DNA analysis by hybrid capture-based NGS.
